This series of seminars examines the impact of the current Covid-19 crisis on individuals, couples and families through the eyes of practitioners as we navigate this unprecedented and surreal shift in our lives.
Our speakers will explore the emotional meanings of being in lockdown, the reforming of one’s sense of self within states of isolation, or in relationships with sudden intensified intimacy. As attachment issues become more acutely felt, where life-threatening levels of danger are encountered, where jobs have been lost, livelihoods disrupted, relationships frayed, loved ones lost, these enormous pressures on the psyche are inevitably a new focus of therapy. How can we ameliorate the impact for our clients and – even perhaps – use this as a therapeutic opportunity? Where do we find our deepest resilience in times of crisis?

Couples In and Emerging from Lockdown
Couple relationships form a bridge between the internal worlds of each partner and their external environment. As individuals they constitute an important part of their partner’s environment, and as a couple they are affected by the wider environment they inhabit. Threats from any of these sources affect the quality and stability of their relationship, both consciously and unconsciously. This seminar will consider the impact of Covid-19 on individuals and couples working in therapy remotely, exploring the lexicon of “lockdown” for its psychological significance, fears of contagion and threats to a relationship’s capacity to offer containment. The presenters will consider changes to the therapeutic relationship and frame when working remotely with couples and also the potential of therapy to help partners manage anxiety associated with the current pandemic.

Working Online at Psychological Depth: A Critical Approach Addressing the Challenges and Opportunities
Since the Covid-19 crisis struck in the middle of March, talking therapists have moved their practices online wholesale and globally. While some will have had previous experience of online work, most will have had little to no training and may even have strong prejudices about working in this way. Working online is no longer a choice, but a necessity, and it is the duty of every psychotherapist to do so ethically, responsibly, and critically. In this workshop, Aaron will draw on his own research in this area alongside more recent work to enable therapists to make best use of their online practices.

Dr Reenee Singh
Family Breakdown or Breakthrough in the Time of Coronavirus?
Families and couples are under considerable stress during this period of lockdown. At one level, most families experience the more “ordinary” stresses of having to share space, work remotely and supervise virtual schools, while at another level, there are anxieties about health and mortality among immediate and extended family members, which may be exacerbated for migrant families. The stresses might be particularly acute for those families where any member of the family has underlying physical or mental health difficulties, where one or both parents are key workers or when the parents are separated or divorced. The rituals that help families to make transitions from one life-cycle stage to another may also have been adapted so that weddings and funerals have different forms and meanings during this time. In this lecture, Reenee will explore ways of helping families to deal with the ordinary and extraordinary stresses of this period, so that they find opportunities to create closer and more fulfilling relationships during this crisis.

Anna Santamouris
The Impact of the Pandemic on Clients with Addiction Issues.
Anna will introduce her talk with psychoanalytic theory as a background to problems of addiction in clients. The talk will address states of narcissism and how these pertain to the addictions, including the mirror transference (mirroring and reflection), a preoccupation with self and inner reality, the imbalance between objective and subjective aspects of the self and the difficult relationship to reality that shows itself in a withdrawal from object relations alongside illusions of self-sufficiency. Anna will also discuss the loosening of repressions that may be triggered during the pandemic and the importance of developing the capacity for inner sustainment. The impact of the pandemic presents therapists with some real dilemmas in these areas: Anna will include client material to illustrate clients who have stayed sober, those who are struggling to remain sober and others who use binge-restrict cycles in their eating behaviour.

“Lockdown is where we always live” – From Proximity Seeking to Distance Regulation, a Case Presentation On Working Online with a Client Who Comes from a Disorganised Attachment Style
The abrupt appearance of Covid-19 invading our consulting room has thrown us all into a state of disorientation and forced us to work online only. While slowly adjusting her practice to this new norm, to her surprise, Orit found that not much has changed for those clients who suffer complex trauma with disorganised attachment styles. In this lecture, she will discuss a client whose attachment to her mother was preoccupied, enmeshed and disorganised. The lack of boundaries and the coercive relationship the client had with her mother was re-enacted in the therapeutic dyad, which now takes place onscreen. This talk will explore these dynamics and how attachment-based psychotherapy enabled playing a role to move towards better reflective functioning and the growth of intersubjective relatedness.

Linda Graham, MFT
Developing Resilience for Clinical Work in Challenging Times
That the birds of worry and care fly over your head, this you cannot change; but that they build nests in our hair, this you can prevent. Chinese proverb
Resilience, the capacities to cope quickly and skilfully with any crises or catastrophe, is especially needed in times of sudden transition and upheaval such as we’re experiencing with Covid-19. This webinar will provide practitioners with the very practical tools they need to help clients manage anxiety, distress and overwhelm and to maintain their own clarity and well-being. Linda will talk through ways to help clients to recover and sustain the natural baseline equilibrium of the nervous system including body-based tools of breath, touch and movement. She will give thought to the importance of cultivating positive emotional and relational experiences that shift the functioning of our brain from negativity, contraction, reactivity to more receptivity, more openness to learning and growth, more optimism. The direct, measurable, cause and effect outcome is resilience.

Social Dreaming in Lockdown – Bridging the Distance
It is apparent that many people are having vivid dreams during the pandemic carrying symbols, meanings and messages from our internal worlds and the collective in relation to the pandemic. This final seminar of the series will be a social dream matrix, where we share dreams and our associations to them, making connections where possible, no attempt is made to interpret the dreams for the dreamer. Through listening and responding to the dreams, in terms of how they affect us, we can create a network of meanings, bridging the distance which lockdown puts between us. This gives us an opportunity to see how our dreams are bearing witness to the challenging realities of the strange time we are living through. The matrix will run for an hour, after which there will be time for processing, followed by general discussion, no previous experience of a dream matrix is required.
